Gifts for babies who have no idea it’s Christmas but deserve the good stuff!

After the big decision of what to name your child comes a whole host of smaller, but no less meaningful, decisions. Especially when it comes to Christmas, there are traditions, customs and values we begin to shape for our own families, from the way we decorate our homes to the rituals we look forward to on Christmas morning.

There may be fond memories from your own childhood that you want to recreate, traditions you’re keen to pass down, and others you’d happily leave in the distant past. Then there are the new customs you might discover along the way, influenced by modern life, local traditions or simply what feels right for your family.

A baby’s first Christmas is a funny little milestone. They have absolutely no idea what’s going on, will probably be more interested in the wrapping paper than the present, and may find the whole occasion overwhelming. And yet, in many ways, this is the perfect time to start investing in the pieces that will become part of their childhood.

Not necessarily more toys, or piles of presents they’ll barely remember or play with, but the lovely things that can be brought out every December, becoming familiar, treasured and woven into the fabric of family life and a childhood of memory making.

Buy for the childhood, not just the child

When they’re one, they won’t know whether their stocking was hand-embroidered, whether their Christmas sack was made from beautiful organic cotton, or whether the nativity set on the mantelpiece was chosen with the intention of becoming a family heirloom.

But one day, they will. They’ll know which stocking is theirs, which recipe from the Advent book they love best, and which decoration they want to hang up first. They’ll recognise the little rituals that signal the beginning of Christmas. They’ll remember the excitement of the Advent calendar each morning, or sitting together to read a favourite Christmas story. And, before you know it, they’ll be the ones asking when the decorations are coming down from the loft.

These are the things that make childhood Christmases feel special. Not necessarily the biggest or most expensive gifts, but the familiar objects and little traditions that return year after year.

The Christmas pieces worth investing in...

A stocking that’s theirs for life

A beautiful stocking is one of those purchases that can feel a little extravagant when your recipient is still more interested in chewing the furniture than opening presents. But think beyond this December. Imagine it hanging in the same spot each Christmas Eve, gradually becoming part of the scenery, until one day your child is far too big to believe in Father Christmas but wouldn't dream of Christmas without it.

Timeless, beautifully made and personal enough to feel like theirs, it's a piece that can follow them through childhood, and perhaps even find its way into their own home one day.

A Christmas sack for all the excitement

For little ones, a Christmas sack is as practical as it is magical. It can hold the presents that appear overnight, be brought out year after year, and eventually become part of the Christmas morning ritual. Opt for quality and a design that will stand the test of time, rather than something that feels disposable once the season is over.

An Advent calendar that creates a ritual

The beauty of a reusable Advent calendar is that it gives you the opportunity to create your own tradition. Perhaps you'll fill the pockets with little treats, tiny treasures, handwritten notes or activities to enjoy together. Perhaps you'll keep things wonderfully simple. For the first two years my son had our nativity set pieces tucked in each pocket.

At one, your child may need a little help discovering what's inside. In a few years, they'll be racing downstairs to find the next pocket. Before long, the calendar itself will be as much a part of Christmas as the tree.

Advent books to read together

A Christmas book is never just a Christmas book when it's read year after year. Familiar stories become part of the season, their words remembered and anticipated, their illustrations recognised long before little ones can read for themselves.

Building a collection of Advent books, or choosing a special story to revisit every December, is a lovely way to slow down during what can otherwise be a rather frantic month. It's a gift for the child, of course, but also for the grown-up who gets to snuggle up beside them.

A nativity set to grow into

A nativity set might seem an unlikely present for a one-year-old, but it can be one of the loveliest investments in a family Christmas. Initially, it may simply be something to look at together. As your child grows, it can become a way to tell the Christmas story, introduce familiar characters and begin a tradition of arranging the figures and adding new animals each year. Other options are Christmas figurines like the Lanka Kade Christmas characters.

Choose a set that suits your family's beliefs and style, and that you'll be happy to bring out for decades to come.

A little less, but a little more meaningful

Of course, there's no need to turn a baby's first Christmas into a grand exercise in tradition-building. They don't need a perfectly curated Christmas, and as they grow, how you celebrate will evolve.

There's joy in the silly, the crumpled wrapping paper and the photograph where nobody is looking at the camera. There is also something wonderful about choosing a handful of beautiful things with the future in mind.

The pieces that last aren't necessarily the ones that make the biggest impression on Christmas morning. They're the ones that quietly return, year after year, gathering memories along the way.

So, if you're wondering what to buy a one-year-old this Christmas, perhaps think less about what will delight them on the day itself, and more about what might still be part of their Christmas when they're five, fifteen or even grown up.

After all, they may have no idea it's Christmas just yet. But you're already building the childhood they'll one day look back on.
