If you're trying to decide between the Toniebox and the Yoto Player, I am here to give you the ultimate parent comparison to help you decide. As a low-screen family, we've lived with both systems for years, giving us plenty of hands-on experience with how they compare in everyday family life.

We bought our first Toniebox when it launched in the UK in 2018 as a third birthday present for my eldest son. When Yoto arrived in 2020, I began stocking it at Timeless Toys, and my son received a Yoto Mini for his sixth birthday. More recently, we bought the Toniebox 2 for our youngest son (aged 5) when it launched for Christmas 2025.

Having used both players with children of different ages at home, we've experienced their strengths, weaknesses and quirks first-hand. I've experienced how both brands have developed and changed. In this guide, I'll compare the Toniebox and Yoto Player side by side to help you decide which is the better fit for your child. Similarities (Toniebox 2 & Yoto 3rd Gen)

Age Range	Both devices now cater up to 12 years old. Toniebox have introduced 'Tonie Books' and 'Clever Tonies' to offer content for older children (which are cheaper than the character tonies too).
Content Collaborations	Both players have collaborated with the same major book and media publishers, major brands and character franchises. So for content, this is like for like, right up to 12 years.
Technical Features	Both have bluetooth for wireless headphones and both can operate without the internet once content has downloaded. Both charge using a USB-C port. Both have a battery life of 10-hour continuous use on a single charge. The Yoto Mini has 16-hours of charge.
Night Settings	Both offer night time settings and a built-in LED nightlight. Toniebox also offers a 'Sleepy Friends' night light character that can be additionally purchased for a Toniebox. Yoto Mini does not have a nightlight.
Day/Night Gro-clock	Both offer a day/night groclock feature that can be set within their apps. Both offer a wake-up alarm.
Make Your Own	Both provide a MYO card-character with your new machine and additional MYO cards/characters can be purchased.
Podcast	Both offer their own podcast. Tonie offers 'Today with tonies' which requires an initial tonie purchase (£8.99) to access this service. Yoto offers 'Daily Yoto' which is free from the app.
Free Content	On the apps, additional free and sample content is available.
Useful Timers/Daily Routines (Toothbrushing, Tidying Up)	This is offered for free but has to be accessed via the Yoto app, unless set to one of the device buttons. These are available on the Tonie via a pocket tonie (8.99), and can then be accessed independently without the need for the app.
Travel & On-The Go	Yoto offers the Yoto Mini, a smaller travel version of their product. Toniebox is releasing the Tonie Lite in 2026, a smaller travel version of their product. Both offer bluetooth and standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Neither Tonie or Yoto offer noise cancelling (ANC) headphones.

Figures Vs Cards	Toniebox is based on plastic and silicone characters and 'pocket books'. Whilst Yoto Players use a plastic card system.
Age Range	Yoto is recommended from age 3years+, whilst Tonieboxes are suitable from 1year+ with the My First Tonies soft silicone characters.
Game Feature	Toniebox2 offers a screen-free interactive ToniePlay game system that uses a controller and game disc that fits on top of the box. This really sets the Toniebox apart from the Yoto.
Yoto Radio	Yoto offers a daytime and night time radio show.
Podcasts	Whilst both offer their own podcast, Yoto offers access to over 100 curated kids podcast shows.
Room Thermometer	Yoto 3rd Generation offers a room thermometer which is great for parents.
Sustainability	Tonies continues to evolve with sustainability in mind. Pocket Tonies (Tonie Books and Clever Tonies) are made with 50% recycled plastic, nightlights and My First Tonies are made from silicone and packaging is now 50% recycled materials. Yoto uses certified-sustainable packaging across its whole range and Yoto Player covers are silicone.
Relationship with retailers	Yoto has increasingly moved towards a direct customer subscription and digital service. As a result, they have made it increasingly hard for shops to stock their products. We are one of the few remaining to stock their products. This means that as a customer it will become harder to find their cards on the high street and as a treat for the kids. Toniebox is keen to build and maintain their presence in independent shops and available on the high street.

Why Buy An Audio Player?

For me, audio isn't about replacing books—it's about replacing screen time.

Stories have become part of our family's everyday life in ways that simply weren't possible with books alone: while getting ready for school, after school instead of reaching for the TV or tablet, dancing around the lounge with Nanny to favourite songs, on long journeys, in waiting rooms, overnight hospital stays, at bedtime to help relax, and even making routines like brushing teeth easier and without the battle.

I've seen first-hand how listening to stories and having access to encyclopaedic content has helped develop my son's vocabulary, concentration, imagination and confidence. Having owned these audio players for the last 8 years, his love of audio content has gone hand in hand with his enthusiasm for reading, and I genuinely believe both the Toniebox and Yoto have played a part in that.

Conclusion

A few years ago, I would have recommended the Yoto Player or Yoto Mini without hesitation. Since the launch of the Toniebox 2 and the introduction of pocket tonies, I no longer think there's a clear winner and with the upcoming launch of Toniebox Lite, it really seems its now a level playing field and preference.

That's good news for parents, because it means you can choose the player that best suits your child rather than worrying about making the "right" choice. Both are thoughtfully designed, high-quality products that I've used extensively at home with my own children, which is exactly why we choose to stock them at Timeless Toys.

The Yoto remains the better choice for my 10-year old. He loves the podcasts available on this player. For my youngest, now aged 6, the Toniebox is the better choice. Yoto cards would easily get lost by him and probably posted between the floorboards! We also enjoy the interactive game feature which is perfect for him.
